Public libraries have been a source of free reading material for ages. With the advent of the e-book, the access to free reading material of every genre is becoming even more available. Below is a list of ten of the top sources online for downloading free e-books.
- Amazon – You don’t need to leave Amazon to look for free e-books. They have plenty of them available to download immediately to your Kindle, PC or other device. They occasionally offer free downloads of newer releases as a promotional effort as well.
- Barnes and Noble – B&N won’t be left out of the game. They have their own large selection of free e-book downloads for the Nook as well.
- Project Gutenberg – This is one of the oldest and most highly recommended sites for free e-books. You will find only the finest and the best of reading on this site. Funded by donations and staffed by volunteers, this site has been committed to providing great literature to the public via the internet since its inception.
- Adobe e-book library – Adobe provides many full e-book selections to download, in addition to sample chapters from many other popular book titles. Their Digital Editions Software is also provided as a free download for use in reading e-books.
- Free-ebooks.net – A huge site with lots to choose from, including free magazines. You can search for books by category or author. This site will also allow authors to submit their own e-books to the site.
- Lulu – This site is known mostly as a self-publishing site for both print and e-books. However, many of the authors do offer their e-books for free on the site. It’s a great place to discover a new author or a new poet for free.
- Scribd – Like Lulu, Scribd is a self-publishing site as well, but of e-books primarily. You are likely to find an even greater variety of free e-books to choose from on this site. This is also a site to consider, for creating and selling an e-book yourself.
- The World Library – This is a really great site. It is truly an e-book library. It has great book cover graphics and every category and language imaginable, from classic children’s books to an Asian collection to technical manuals.
- Google e-books – Google not only has a great selection, they have great instructions, as well. They provide you with different options depending on what type of device you plan to use for reading the book, ipad, iphone, laptop or e-ink reader.
- The Internet Public Library – Created by a consortium of universities and library enthusiasts, this site is another great free resource. It has special categories for kids, teens and news sources.
In spite of technological age, reading is still one of the most popular past times. For some, reading is an escape into a fictional world; for others, it is a source of knowledge; for many, it is both.

Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and Linkedin are all pretty well-known as social networking sites, but they are really just the tip of the iceberg. There are new sites cropping up everyday. Many of the new sites are targeted towards a unique focus group. Here a few of those sites which you may not be aware of.
- PrayerGroup This one is brand new in 2011. It is a faith based network with an emphasis on providing prayer support and encouragement. It already has a good international following. If you’re looking for a place to receive or give out support, this would be a good place to start.
- MyBlab. Be Linked As Believers is the basis for BLAB. It is one of the many Christian social networking sites. Many Christian music artists and Christian ministries are using it as a place to connect with their support base.
- CookEatShare An online network for chefs and other food lovers. This is much more than a recipe site, although you will find plenty of those there. It is a much more interactive site, that is geared towards those of a serious culinary mindset.
- MoshiMonsters This is one of the kid focused networking sites. Similar to the Webkinz theme, children adopt their own Moshi Monsters and can interact with other kids they know, in a safe environment online. The site games can without joining but parental permission is required to become a member of the social networking aspect.
- Squad Room Law enforcement officers tend to stick to themselves, so they have their own social networking site as well. This site is a sub-site of Officers.com, a site dedicated to law enforcement professionals, and providing a variety of other services.
- PlanetCancer This social network for cancer victims is specifically for young adults with cancer, ages 20-30. It is a place for encouragement from others dealing with the same types of issues that no one in this age group is prepared to deal with.
- AllieFinkle Another kid’s social networking site, this one has been created by Scholastic magazine and is focused on pre-teen girls. Lots of encouragement towards reading, learning and just plain having fun.
- Entrepreneur Connect A connection site for businesses of all types. This site has a good following and allows you to search by industry group or name. It provides posting opportunities for questions and answers, as well as marketing posts.
- SeeMeBecomeFamous Another brand new site for 2011, this is for those searching for stardom. Promote your talents and mugshot, and start building your fan base online.
- HomeEnergyPros Even the government has gotten into the act. This is a dot.gov social networking site for those working to make our homes more energy efficient. If green is your color, you might want to check out this site.

Twitter is a social network whereby it’s users send short bursts of information to their followers. Many celebrities are tweeting now as a way of connecting with their fans. Wow, what did we do before computers to find out if someone likes you? Well, you might have had your friend ask that person for you. Or maybe you gave them a note asking if they liked you. Don’t worry, now there are all new ways to find out if someone likes you. - Friend them on Facebook: This would be a first step mind you, because they might friend you and just like you as a friend, but it’s certainly a positive start.
- Search for Facebook stalker: Maybe the boy or girl you like is shy and just likes to read your posts and doesn’t ever say anything. You can go to FaceBook Stalker and see who is lurking around you Facebook.
- Online a lot: See if the person is online and available for chatting a lot. They may be hoping you will chat, so send them a quick greeting and see if they respond. If they don’t then it doesn’t look good.
- Commenting on your posts: Does he comment on a lot of your posts? That means that he is interested in what you are doing and typing. This is a good sign.
- Asking about your day on chat: Anyone who is truly interested in you, as a person will ask you how your day went. More than just, “How are you”, but really seeming interested in what you did that day.
