Word gets around faster than ever now, thanks largely in part to social networking sites like Twitter, where it’s easy to blast out information quickly and efficiently to a large audience. So it was only a matter of time, and out of a need for self-preservation, that movie studios would adjust their marketing accordingly to incorporate these strategies. With the power to spread opinion at the speed of light, Twitter has helped change the way Hollywood promotes its product. The following are 10 ways that movie studios leverage Twitter:

Live tweets – Filmmakers and actors alike frequently tweet directly from the set. Knowing that first night tweet reviews can kill a movie by the second night, they are getting more proactive in creating an early buzz.

Twitter apps – Studios add a Twitter app to all of their official movie websites in order to gauge public opinion as early as possible. They want to stave off any negative publicity before it gains any momentum.

Contests – Production studios will sometimes hold contests for their followers, offering free tickets to previews and screenings, in an effort to help create some positive momentum prior to release dates.

Verified accounts – Movie stars and execs typically have active Twitter accounts, which have been verified so that followers know that it’s a real account and not an imposters, which they will use to gain followers and communicate with fans. Creating a network of followers helps smooth the way for good box office receipts when their movies are released.

Links to trailers – Movie trailers are often linked to by studio exec and actors’ tweets, so that they can take a pulse, as it were, prior to the release date and gauge the response from their loyal followers.

Keeping up to date with relevant tweets – Smart movie studio execs are always proactively searching tweets for hashtags and keywords that are relevant to their product. Like any shrewd business owner, they are keeping their fingers on the public’s pulse.

Direct interaction – Interaction with people is no longer an option – it’s a necessity. The most successful businesses keep in contact with their customers regularly. Movie studios now have full-time personnel who maintain their social presence on sites like Twitter for just that purpose.

Creating hype – Marketing resources have been drastically redistributed by virtue of social media’s impact. Movie studios now rely as much on sites like Twitter to create buzz for their films as they do in traditional advertising venues.

Exclusive scoops – Movie studios will also post exclusive content as well as web links to provide social media members with access that wouldn’t otherwise be publicly available. This strategy was instrumental in the box office success of movies like “The Vow”.

Ongoing consumer research – Research conducted by movie studios on Twitter has helped them determine what types of films they need to be focusing on, and what tastes are prevalent among the movie-going public so that they are able to tailor new movies accordingly.

Twitter has completely revolutionized the way that movie studios are marketing to their audiences, making it a more interactive and personalized approach. This way of marketing has helped create hype for upcoming movies, kept up a stead buzz after the movies have been released, and allowed viewers to gain an edge on upcoming and current films.

If religion is your message, then the mountaintop from which you may spread it has no better modern-day equivalent than Twitter. Word travels fast on Twitter, which is a big reason for its enormous rise in popularity since its beginning just 6 years ago. So if you want to enlighten the masses with your own brand of spirituality, we’ve gathered some examples of how to do it. Here are ten ways to spread religion via Twitter:

Profile – The obvious place to start would be to establish a Twitter account for your church/group/synagogue, etc. Once you’ve got a profile for a pulpit, it’s off to the races. Use your profile to share what your religion is all about. Provide links and contact info.

Groups – Social media like Twitter have numerous groups within their membership, dedicated to all manner of interests and topics. Joining an existing group with a focus on religion/spirituality gets you to the audience you’re likely seeking.

Tweet – Share the message or news about your religion in your tweets. Provide excerpts or highlights of your philosophy or canon for readers to examine. Include links to relevant websites where appropriate.

Hash Tags – A very handy indexing tool (though somewhat misused), these provide a means for searching specific terms or topics. If, for instance, you wanted to establish or follow conversation about evolution, you could simply use the hash tag #evolution.

Follow – Look for other @religion people who are already followers of your brand of religion and network with them to help spread the word. As you develop followers yourself, then you can spread your religion via …

RT – Re-tweets are the echoes in the halls of Twitter, the repeaters in the phone line. When you post updates and info about your religion, followers will retweet across their network of followers, and that’s how word spreads like wildfire.

Events – Whether it’s a prayer vigil, discussion group, revival, or concert, let your followers know what’s happening, and when and where it’s going down. When you do schedule events to promote your group, another good marketing tool, so to speak is …

Promotional Contests – There are a number of ways to approach this. You could have a contest for who gathers the most followers, or gets the most retweets of an announcement for the event; or a simple trivia quiz, whatever. It motivates people to get involved is the point.

Twitter Feeds – You can carry the word directly to the people, right on their desktops and iPhones when you provide regular updates to transmit over feeds to apps and widgets everywhere.

Social Media as Mission Field – As it has done for millions of people around the world already, Twitter can be the tool through which you build personal relationships across the web. Connecting with people and developing those relationships first is the key to earning the privilege of sharing your message with them.

No matter what religion or belief you are promoting, Twitter is a great tool to use. Take a look around and see if you can find like-minded people to help you spread the word. But if you can’t find anyone right away, don’t be afraid to take the first step. After all, it only takes one voice to be heard.

This isn’t so much about issues of free speech as it is about the aesthetics of the online world, although some of the subject matter does appear to cross even legal lines. Some of the sites that I wish were stricken from the internet include those where serious legal issues have arisen, while others merely have the capability of annoying people to death.

Here are a few of the things I’m talking about, some petty, others literally life and death.

Pop-Ups – Anything that gets in the way of what I’m doing is immediately suspect. If I don’t automatically win the big prize I’m not interested in whatever else they are selling. The issue is compounded when the site makes you hunt for a way to close it.

Ghosts – There oughta be a law against “deceased” sites still showing up on a Google search.

Toddlers and Tiaras – “Toddlers and Tiaras” is a “reality” television series about little-kid beauty pageants, complete with contrived “rivalries”, and it has spawned an entire industry’s worth of bad blogging and reportage. In this case, banning the television show might be the answer.

Too Thin – Anorexia isn’t against the law, but websites that promote anorexia (pro-Ana sites) may need to be banned, and there is pending legislation in some European countries to shut down those sites.

Suicide – Many victims of suicide visited sites that may have encouraged them to end their lives rather than to seek other forms of help. This issue is a lot bigger than some insensitive or annoying websites, and has serious social ramifications.

What’s the Law? – Sites may tout themselves as operating legally, and people flock to use the site, only to find out later that what they were doing was wrong. This comes up with a lot of file-sharing sites, particularly where copyright infringement may be involved.

Loophole Porn – There are many sites which find ways to skirt anti-pornography statutes, and these loopholes need to be closed. Children across the country and around the world are being exploited and victimized every day.

Sugar – Teachers may want to see erased any site which promotes ingestion of sugar and/or caffeine. Anecdotal evidence is good enough for teachers who seem to spend their day prying children off the ceilings after they’ve been addled by an overdose of “Sugary Choco-laden Sugar Cubes. . .now fortified with Vitamin D”.

“Celebrity” Sites – A-list, B-list, C-list, Z-list, it doesn’t matter. I couldn’t care less about what goes on in the lives of so-called “celebrities” who are no more than a bunch of spoiled kids with too much money and time on their hands.

Filtering – Anyone who has been a “boss” often wishes that any website that doesn’t pertain to work could be banned. There are filtering programs, such as Barracuda, that are often installed on school networks, and these programs can “ban” sites and categories, although students and teachers are often able to find easy ways around the filtering programs.

These choices aren’t all about the laws of the land; some are more concerned with what should be some laws regarding good taste.

Some riddles are complex, like logic puzzles, while others are simple wordplay; but the good ones, the brain teasers, are those that suck us in and keep us guessing. The solution may seem obvious at first glance, but beware the twist or the hidden clue. On the other hand, some may seem complex, because we’ve overlooked the obvious. In any case, here are some riddles with a common theme: 10 math riddles related to age.

1.	The ages of a father and son add up to 66. The father’s age is the son’s age reversed. How old are they? (There are 3 possible solutions for this one.)

Answer(s): Father 51, son 15
Father 60, son (0)6
Father 42, son 24

2.	A woman was born in 1986 and died in 1964, at the age of 42! How can this be?

Answer: She was born in Room 1986, and died in Room 1964, of the same hospital.

3.	A man has three daughters. When the family doctor asked their ages he said, “The product of their ages is 36.” When the doctor still couldn’t find their ages he said, “OK, I’ll give you another clue: the sum of their ages is the same as the number of my house.” The doctor looks at the address on their medical records, and says he still doesn’t have enough information to figure out their ages. So the man says, “You’re right. My eldest daughter hates broccoli.” With that, the doctor was able to figure out their ages. How old are they?

Answer: There are only 8 possible combinations of ages that could give a product of 36. Two of them (1×6x6 and 2×2x9) both add up to 13. So if the doctor couldn’t guess their ages from the house number, it had to be one of these two combinations of ages. When the dad mentioned his “eldest daughter”, then the doctor knew that there was only one daughter older than the other two, so he figured out that the girls’ ages were: 2, 2, and 9.

4.	Here’s a rather timely age-related riddle: A man dies of old age on his 25th birthday. How is this possible?

Answer: He was born on Feb. 29th. (That only comes along every 4 years, in a leap year.)

5.	When asked how old she was, Karen replied, “In 2 years I will be twice as old as I was 5 years ago.” How old is she?

Answer: 12. So when Karen is 14, she will indeed be twice as old as she was 5 years ago, when she was 7.

6.	You’re driving a bus, and at the first stop 8 people get on; and two people get off. At the 2nd stop 4 people get on and 7 people get off. At the 3rd stop 9 people get off and 3 people get on. How old is the bus driver?

Answer: Your age (since you’re driving the bus!)

7.	How many birthdays does the average human have?

Answer: One, and we celebrate it every year.

8.	I asked a girl how old she was; she smiled and said: “The day before yesterday I was 22; but next year I’ll be 25.” What is her birthday and when was the date of our conversation?

Answer: Her birthday is Dec. 31, and our conversation was on Jan. 1, at a New Year’s party.

9.	Mary is 54 years old, and her mother is 80. How many years ago was her mother three times the age of her daughter Mary?

Answer: 41 years

10. Dave’s age today is three times what it will be three years from now minus three times what his age was three years ago. How old is Dave?

Answer: 18

Well, FaceBook has made some changes to the way their site works, again. There’ve been a lot of complaints and threats made by patrons to take their social networking efforts to a different site. Let’s take a look at the most common complaints and the actual problems that the changes have caused.

Who’s Important? A common complaint is that FaceBook is now deciding whose posts appear at the top of each person’s newsfeed page, based on criteria that may not fit each patron’s desire. FaceBook’s response is that there are ways to change settings to alleviate this complaint, but they haven’t actually made it clear to everyone how those changes are done.

Missing Friends’ Updates. Another common complaint is that “I’m missing updates from people that I am interested in, because of all the other stuff that FaceBook brings up for me.” FaceBook has not, at the time of this writing, responded to this complaint.

News Ticker Complaint #1. The scrolling real-time ticker along the right side of the newsfeed page, now shows both what your friends are currently posting on theirs or others’ walls, and what others are posting on your friends’ walls. This means that people with whom you are not connected can now follow someone else’s postings back to see what is happening on your wall. The complaint is that patrons now have little control over who sees their postings, because of this.

News Ticker Complaint #2. Because the scrolling ticker shows everything that I do, people that are on my friends list now will be able to see what I’m doing any time I post on anyone’s wall, and will know when I’m on FaceBook. One person complained that she had told someone that she was shutting down and going to bed for the night, and then had to deal with being caught in a lie, when that person noticed she was still posting elsewhere.

News Ticker Complaint #3. In addition to the above problems, I’ve seen several complaints mention that “People who I don’t even know are now commenting on posts on my wall. Why would I want a bunch of strangers making remarks and interrupting my conversations with people that I want to converse with?”

Offsite Tracking. This is really not part of the recent changes that FaceBook has made, but it has come to light at the same time that these changes came along. It turns out that FaceBook has been installing cookies in their patrons’ browsers that allow them to see what patrons are doing, even when they are not on FaceBook. So, if you visit your FaceBook profile, and then go on to another website, FaceBook can see where you went and what you looked at on that site. This information then is used in the advertisements that you see while on FaceBook.

Too Much Change. Another common complaint that I’ve run across sounds a bit like this: “All I asked for from them was for them to add an ‘unlike’ button. I didn’t ask for all of this other stuff!”

These 7 complaints cover the real issues that have been raised by the recent changes that FaceBook has made. Most of the other complaining appears to be based, not on real problems with FaceBook, but with the fact that people like for things to remain the same, once they’ve grown accustomed to them. Already, the volume of complaints is dropping drastically.

So, for the last 3 items on this list, we’ll keep it simple.

Learning Curve. “I hate having to learn all of this new stuff! I just want to be able to do what I’ve always done.”

Bad Day. “I’ve had a rotten day at the office, my drive home was stressful, and now I have to deal with a new facebook layout?”

Not Broke. “It was just fine, exactly as it was. Why fix what isn’t broken?”

As I’ve seen on FaceBook and other social sites before, I suspect that it won’t be long until folks become used to the new look and features, and will just continue on, until the next time FaceBook makes some changes. At that point, they will then fill cyber space with complaints, until they once again become accustomed.

Some people use this ‘check-in’ feature occasionally and others are checking-in on a regular basis at every location they end up at during the day. If you’ve been wondering why some people feel that they need to always check-in EVERYWHERE on facebook, here are ten of the reasons.

It’s cool! - Isn’t that the biggest and best reason for doing anything? Everybody else is doing it, so you might as well join in the fun and let people know all the places you go to eat or go on vacation, right?

Meet-ups – How many times have you missed a chance to connect with someone, just because the two of you didn’t realize that you were in the same place at the same time? Checking-in on facebook can create some great meet-up opportunities that you might miss otherwise.

Alibi – Where were you? Constant facebook check-ins can eliminate the need to answer or verify that question. Just tell the person to keep their eye on your facebook status and they’ll never have to ask that question again.

Promote your favs – If you have a favorite coffee shop, restaurant or vacation destination, wouldn’t you want to give them some extra promotion by letting your friends know just how often you go there?

Promote yourself – If you want to promote yourself as being a mover and a shaker, you can easily show that by where you’re checking-in. It’s a great way to gain attention.

Get input – When going to a new spot, checking-in on facebook can often garner input and advice from your friends. This might be a menu selection at a restaurant or an attraction you don’t want to miss on your trip.

Reminder – Posting your arrival at your destination can become a reminder to those who are supposed to be meeting you there and can spur them on to get there quicker.

Need anything? - When shopping, it can serve as an opportunity for friends to make a ‘pick-me-up’ request while you are in a particular store or area of town.

Easy post – Posting your check-in everywhere you go makes for an easy way to keep your status updated, without having to give much additional commentary.

Annoy your friends – If you are one of those people who are always on the run, your check-ins will be continually changing. This may be laughable to your friends at first, but eventually it will probably be annoying to them and laughable to you. This is especially true if they are stuck at work and you’re out having fun.

Of course, I’ve left the biggest reason for checking-in everywhere on facebook off the list. That reason is the one it was created for in the first place, to better target ads towards your preferences and to give free advertising to the places you visit. If those are motivating reasons for you, then keep it up.

With Ghandi’s commitment to simplicity of life, it is hard to imagine that he would have participated in the Twitter world, but if he had, I’m sure that his tweets would have been re-tweeted many times over. Should he have been inclined to share his thoughts in 140 character lines over this digital medium, they may have been something like this.

“My dog is no more, or less, a pet to me than I am to him. I would never bite him.” Ghandi believed himself, and mankind, to be no greater than the other inhabitants of the earth.

“The benefit of prison isolation is that the paparazzi are not permitted here.” Ghandi had an extreme distaste for the media.

“Violent men create their god in their image, not the other way around.” Ghandi believed in the perfection of God while attesting to the inherent imperfection of men.

“If you are hungry, take the last of my bread; and we will both enjoy contentedness.” Ghandi maintained that self-sacrifice brought fulfillment.

“The internet has brought the world closer together and people further apart.” Ghandi only saw the value in face-to-face, intimate communications.

“Domino’s delivers in thirty minutes that which the government cannot achieve in centuries.” Ghandi held the government wholly responsible and accountable for the plight of hunger in his country.

“The more developed a nation becomes, the more it destroys its people.” Having a firm belief in the simplicity of life and welfare, Ghandi saw technology and industrialization as a means to an end of the human being.

“Those who aspire to bring terror are, themselves, the most afraid.” Ghandi could not comprehend such acts of violence and attributed such as flaws in personal faith and not as an act based upon oppression.

“Those who desire to detonate themselves, to meet their God, should do so alone.”Ghandi confirmed, and lived, the belief that no man has the right to claim another’s life–for any reason.

“While good Indian people are tending the world’s software issues, their gardens are overrun with weeds.” Ghandi had issues with international trade and trade services, believing that the Indian people would be prostituted. He also contended that agricultural ventures were a more honest form of work.

If you are looking for something profound to send out in a tweet, you might want to look up some of Ghandi’s quotes. You are sure to find words of wisdom that others will appreciate and benefit from in the records of his words.
