Some riddles are complex, like logic puzzles, while others are simple wordplay; but the good ones, the brain teasers, are those that suck us in and keep us guessing. The solution may seem obvious at first glance, but beware the twist or the hidden clue. On the other hand, some may seem complex, because we’ve overlooked the obvious. In any case, here are some riddles with a common theme: 10 math riddles related to age.

1.	The ages of a father and son add up to 66. The father’s age is the son’s age reversed. How old are they? (There are 3 possible solutions for this one.)

Answer(s): Father 51, son 15
Father 60, son (0)6
Father 42, son 24

2.	A woman was born in 1986 and died in 1964, at the age of 42! How can this be?

Answer: She was born in Room 1986, and died in Room 1964, of the same hospital.

3.	A man has three daughters. When the family doctor asked their ages he said, “The product of their ages is 36.” When the doctor still couldn’t find their ages he said, “OK, I’ll give you another clue: the sum of their ages is the same as the number of my house.” The doctor looks at the address on their medical records, and says he still doesn’t have enough information to figure out their ages. So the man says, “You’re right. My eldest daughter hates broccoli.” With that, the doctor was able to figure out their ages. How old are they?

Answer: There are only 8 possible combinations of ages that could give a product of 36. Two of them (1×6x6 and 2×2x9) both add up to 13. So if the doctor couldn’t guess their ages from the house number, it had to be one of these two combinations of ages. When the dad mentioned his “eldest daughter”, then the doctor knew that there was only one daughter older than the other two, so he figured out that the girls’ ages were: 2, 2, and 9.

4.	Here’s a rather timely age-related riddle: A man dies of old age on his 25th birthday. How is this possible?

Answer: He was born on Feb. 29th. (That only comes along every 4 years, in a leap year.)

5.	When asked how old she was, Karen replied, “In 2 years I will be twice as old as I was 5 years ago.” How old is she?

Answer: 12. So when Karen is 14, she will indeed be twice as old as she was 5 years ago, when she was 7.

6.	You’re driving a bus, and at the first stop 8 people get on; and two people get off. At the 2nd stop 4 people get on and 7 people get off. At the 3rd stop 9 people get off and 3 people get on. How old is the bus driver?

Answer: Your age (since you’re driving the bus!)

7.	How many birthdays does the average human have?

Answer: One, and we celebrate it every year.

8.	I asked a girl how old she was; she smiled and said: “The day before yesterday I was 22; but next year I’ll be 25.” What is her birthday and when was the date of our conversation?

Answer: Her birthday is Dec. 31, and our conversation was on Jan. 1, at a New Year’s party.

9.	Mary is 54 years old, and her mother is 80. How many years ago was her mother three times the age of her daughter Mary?

Answer: 41 years

10. Dave’s age today is three times what it will be three years from now minus three times what his age was three years ago. How old is Dave?

Answer: 18

Well, FaceBook has made some changes to the way their site works, again. There’ve been a lot of complaints and threats made by patrons to take their social networking efforts to a different site. Let’s take a look at the most common complaints and the actual problems that the changes have caused.

Who’s Important? A common complaint is that FaceBook is now deciding whose posts appear at the top of each person’s newsfeed page, based on criteria that may not fit each patron’s desire. FaceBook’s response is that there are ways to change settings to alleviate this complaint, but they haven’t actually made it clear to everyone how those changes are done.

Missing Friends’ Updates. Another common complaint is that “I’m missing updates from people that I am interested in, because of all the other stuff that FaceBook brings up for me.” FaceBook has not, at the time of this writing, responded to this complaint.

News Ticker Complaint #1. The scrolling real-time ticker along the right side of the newsfeed page, now shows both what your friends are currently posting on theirs or others’ walls, and what others are posting on your friends’ walls. This means that people with whom you are not connected can now follow someone else’s postings back to see what is happening on your wall. The complaint is that patrons now have little control over who sees their postings, because of this.

News Ticker Complaint #2. Because the scrolling ticker shows everything that I do, people that are on my friends list now will be able to see what I’m doing any time I post on anyone’s wall, and will know when I’m on FaceBook. One person complained that she had told someone that she was shutting down and going to bed for the night, and then had to deal with being caught in a lie, when that person noticed she was still posting elsewhere.

News Ticker Complaint #3. In addition to the above problems, I’ve seen several complaints mention that “People who I don’t even know are now commenting on posts on my wall. Why would I want a bunch of strangers making remarks and interrupting my conversations with people that I want to converse with?”

Offsite Tracking. This is really not part of the recent changes that FaceBook has made, but it has come to light at the same time that these changes came along. It turns out that FaceBook has been installing cookies in their patrons’ browsers that allow them to see what patrons are doing, even when they are not on FaceBook. So, if you visit your FaceBook profile, and then go on to another website, FaceBook can see where you went and what you looked at on that site. This information then is used in the advertisements that you see while on FaceBook.

Too Much Change. Another common complaint that I’ve run across sounds a bit like this: “All I asked for from them was for them to add an ‘unlike’ button. I didn’t ask for all of this other stuff!”

These 7 complaints cover the real issues that have been raised by the recent changes that FaceBook has made. Most of the other complaining appears to be based, not on real problems with FaceBook, but with the fact that people like for things to remain the same, once they’ve grown accustomed to them. Already, the volume of complaints is dropping drastically.

So, for the last 3 items on this list, we’ll keep it simple.

Learning Curve. “I hate having to learn all of this new stuff! I just want to be able to do what I’ve always done.”

Bad Day. “I’ve had a rotten day at the office, my drive home was stressful, and now I have to deal with a new facebook layout?”

Not Broke. “It was just fine, exactly as it was. Why fix what isn’t broken?”

As I’ve seen on FaceBook and other social sites before, I suspect that it won’t be long until folks become used to the new look and features, and will just continue on, until the next time FaceBook makes some changes. At that point, they will then fill cyber space with complaints, until they once again become accustomed.

Have you been seeing facebook postings from your friends that tell you where they are at the moment? Some people use this ‘check-in’ feature occasionally and others are checking-in on a regular basis at every location they end up at during the day. If you’ve been wondering why some people feel that they need to always check-in EVERYWHERE on facebook, here are ten of the reasons.

It’s cool! - Isn’t that the biggest and best reason for doing anything? Everybody else is doing it, so you might as well join in the fun and let people know all the places you go to eat or go on vacation, right?

Meet-ups – How many times have you missed a chance to connect with someone, just because the two of you didn’t realize that you were in the same place at the same time? Checking-in on facebook can create some great meet-up opportunities that you might miss otherwise.

Alibi – Where were you? Constant facebook check-ins can eliminate the need to answer or verify that question. Just tell the person to keep their eye on your facebook status and they’ll never have to ask that question again.

Promote your favs – If you have a favorite coffee shop, restaurant or vacation destination, wouldn’t you want to give them some extra promotion by letting your friends know just how often you go there?

Promote yourself – If you want to promote yourself as being a mover and a shaker, you can easily show that by where you’re checking-in. It’s a great way to gain attention.

Get input – When going to a new spot, checking-in on facebook can often garner input and advice from your friends. This might be a menu selection at a restaurant or an attraction you don’t want to miss on your trip.

Reminder – Posting your arrival at your destination can become a reminder to those who are supposed to be meeting you there and can spur them on to get there quicker.

Need anything? - When shopping, it can serve as an opportunity for friends to make a ‘pick-me-up’ request while you are in a particular store or area of town.

Easy post – Posting your check-in everywhere you go makes for an easy way to keep your status updated, without having to give much additional commentary.

Annoy your friends – If you are one of those people who are always on the run, your check-ins will be continually changing. This may be laughable to your friends at first, but eventually it will probably be annoying to them and laughable to you. This is especially true if they are stuck at work and you’re out having fun.

Of course, I’ve left the biggest reason for checking-in everywhere on facebook off the list. That reason is the one it was created for in the first place, to better target ads towards your preferences and to give free advertising to the places you visit. If those are motivating reasons for you, then keep it up.

Should he have been inclined to share his thoughts in 140 character lines over this digital medium, they may have been something like this.

“My dog is no more, or less, a pet to me than I am to him. I would never bite him.” Ghandi believed himself, and mankind, to be no greater than the other inhabitants of the earth.

“The benefit of prison isolation is that the paparazzi are not permitted here.” Ghandi had an extreme distaste for the media.

“Violent men create their god in their image, not the other way around.” Ghandi believed in the perfection of God while attesting to the inherent imperfection of men.

“If you are hungry, take the last of my bread; and we will both enjoy contentedness.” Ghandi maintained that self-sacrifice brought fulfillment.

“The internet has brought the world closer together and people further apart.” Ghandi only saw the value in face-to-face, intimate communications.

“Domino’s delivers in thirty minutes that which the government cannot achieve in centuries.” Ghandi held the government wholly responsible and accountable for the plight of hunger in his country.

“The more developed a nation becomes, the more it destroys its people.” Having a firm belief in the simplicity of life and welfare, Ghandi saw technology and industrialization as a means to an end of the human being.

“Those who aspire to bring terror are, themselves, the most afraid.” Ghandi could not comprehend such acts of violence and attributed such as flaws in personal faith and not as an act based upon oppression.

“Those who desire to detonate themselves, to meet their God, should do so alone.”Ghandi confirmed, and lived, the belief that no man has the right to claim another’s life–for any reason.

“While good Indian people are tending the world’s software issues, their gardens are overrun with weeds.” Ghandi had issues with international trade and trade services, believing that the Indian people would be prostituted. He also contended that agricultural ventures were a more honest form of work.

If you are looking for something profound to send out in a tweet, you might want to look up some of Ghandi’s quotes. You are sure to find words of wisdom that others will appreciate and benefit from in the records of his words.

We sports fans love our statistics, don’t we? Get a group of us together and the numbers just start flying. That’s because nothing conveys an understanding of, an abiding reverence for, and an unassailable expertise in, our favorite athletic pastimes than quoting lots of stats.

Living in the Digital Age, however, has given us the capability to proclaim with a straight face that our favorite pitcher is undefeated in day games following a national holiday when facing teams with a shortstop named Hernandez, under a dome. But that’s just an extreme example of useless statistics. More insidious are those “official” stats by which an athlete’s value is actually measured, yet really don’t tell us much. Here is my list of the 10 most useless statistics in professional sports:

Wins (by a Pitcher) – The idea that a pitcher has that much determination in whether his team wins or loses defies reason. Example: you can pitch a near-perfect complete game, give up a solo home run in the 9th inning, and lose because you get no offensive support from your teammates. Or you can stink up the joint, giving up a dozen runs, then get credit for the win simply because your team outscores the other guys. Completely nonsensical.

Time of Possession – This statistic was intended to be indicative of a football team’s ability to control the ball and, by extension, the outcome of the game. How often, though, do you see teams run ten minutes off the clock marching downfield , then stall inside the 20?

Holds (by a Middle Reliever) – This stat is supposed to reflect the effectiveness of middle relief or set-up pitchers in a save situation, but its requirements aren’t even uniformly agreed upon. You can pitch pretty ineffectively and – at least according to SportsTicker – not even record an out, but still get credit for a hold if the next pitcher out of the bullpen cleans up your mess without giving up the lead.

Saves (by a Closer) – For much the same reasons as with the above stat, really. This one is simply awarded to the guy who pitches last for the winning team. The parameters are arbitrary and the stat places more emphasis on the last out than any of the other (potentially more important and harder-earned) previous outs recorded by relievers.

Shots On Goal – OK, we all get the premise here: you can’t score unless you shoot. That doesn’t mean that the hockey team that takes the most shots, scores the most goals, though.

Pitch Count – I’m sorry, but on this one I’ve got to go old school on you. I recall as a youth seeing far more complete games by major league pitchers than you’re ever likely to see today. And this, with far superior sports medicine and training available than ever before.

QB Rating – Impressive at least insofar as its herculean effort to quantify a quarterback’s value. But honestly, does anyone actually understand how this rating is quantified? For crying out loud, a “perfect rating” is 158.3. What does that tell you?

OTL Points – It used to be that hockey teams were awarded two points for wins, one for ties and (naturally) zero for losses. Then some genius reasoned that, Hey, shouldn’t there be a winner and a losers in an overtime game? Nevertheless, shouldn’t everyone still get a prize? So now we’re giving a point to the losing team in overtime games. I mean, why play a game until someone wins rather than record it as a tie if you’re going to award points to both teams anyway?

Championships (as an individual stat) – We’ve all heard the knocks on Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, et al; but this one fails, just like individual wins, and should have no bearing on a player’s value.

MVP – Apart from being chosen via purely subjective criteria, Most Valuable Players tend to come from teams that have the most success. While this may seem logical at first blush, it doesn’t take into consideration the fact that the more successful teams generally aren’t that reliant on just one player. Conversely, a great player can have tremendous value to a team that doesn’t make it to the post-season.

We’re here to help. There are a number of ways you can locate them, and we’ll share some of those means right now. Here’s a list of 10 ways to find people you know on Twitter.

Twitter Search – A Twitter built-in feature. You can search for someone you know by name this way, but unless they’re using their actual name as their user name, you’re out of luck.

Find Friends – From this tab on the Who to Follow page of your Twitter account, you can search for friends on Twitter via an assortment of email services. Click on each one to find contacts using that email. Once you grant Twitter access to your email account, it will pull up a list of email contacts who also have Twitter accounts.

Twellow.com – A directory and search engine, this is most effective if you know what name, business or mutual interests you want to use for search criteria as Twellow is used primarily for searching businesses. You can, however, locate individuals who network with certain organizations.

Tweetscan.com – Think of this one as a sort of Twitter/Google search engine. You can search a variety of criteria – tweets, names, places, subjects – all of which can help you locate contacts.

Follow Whomever Your Friends are Following – Chances are that at some point, many of your friends’ social circles intersect with your own. You can find a lot of mutual friends at these intersections just by following along.

TwitterLocal.com – This site can assist you in a more geographically focused search for contacts. With Twitter’s location-based API in use, this has grown to encompass a much larger source of tweets.

Just Tweet It – This is a broad directory of Twitter users, listed according to interests and categories. You’ll need to know some background about someone first in order to locate them using JustTweetIt.com.

Facebook – Twitter users will generally also have Facebook accounts. You can search for them there, then look for their Twitter user names under their Facebook profile.

Twiangulate – No, I didn’t make this one up. It actually exists, and it works. This tool will satisfy the private eye in you. You can use it to literally twiangulate users by means of vectoring with search terms such as mutual followers, mutual friends and keywords.

Google – There’s a very handy tutorial here on how to use Google search commands to locate Twitter users. If you’ve got a little background info to work with, it can save you some search time. By inputting a few keywords into these commands, you can find your friends relatively easily.

These are all listed as possible signs that a religious sect could be defined as a cult. The internet has created a whole new avenue for these types of extreme groups to contact and recruit new converts. They have websites. They frequent forum discussions. They’re involved in social networking. Here are ten cults that are making use of the world wide web to recruit new followers and promote their message.

Scientology – You can find over 200 domain names registered on the web by this organization. Time magazine ran a cover story on this group calling it the ‘Cult of Greed’. Ron L. Hubbard was its charismatic founder. Escapeint.org is a website the offers help for families are concerned about their family members who are involved. Finding sites set up to help people ‘get out’ or escape from an organization is one sign that a group may be considered a cult.

Unification Church – Also referred to as the ‘Moonies’, the Unification Church was begun by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon. FamilyFed.org is the name of their primary website. Manipulation and deception have been some of the main accusations against the recruiters for this worldwide organization.

Al Qaeda – This name is known around the world as the extremist Muslim organization which claimed responsibility for the 9-11 terrorist attack on the United States. Their online activities are much more covert because of this, but you can be assured that they are making use of the internet to recruit members.

Children of God – The group has over a dozen different websites. Also going by the simple name of ‘The Family’, this group’s founder was David Moses, referred to as Father David and other terms. exFamily.org provides a perspective and warnings from former COG members about the deceptive practices used by this group.

Sri Chinmoy – Typifying many cult structures you find Sri Chinmoy identifying himself as a representative of the Divine and speaking words of love and peace. Yet former group members tell a different story, as in this book by Jayanti Tamm.

Soka Gakkai – Formerly known as Nichirin Shoshu of America (NSA), this organization is Buddhist in its religious nature, but again has a pyramidical structure which includes a dominant leader and practices that do not fit with the mainstream of Buddhism. You will find former members attempting to expose the deception they found in the group.

Fellowship of Friends – Based in California and led by founder Robert Burton (known as ‘The Teacher’), this group demonstrates the traits of mandatory obedience to the cult leader, a negative view of individualism and group manipulation of those within the community.

White Suppremacy Hate Groups – There are many groups that are using the internet to recruit members that may not always utilize a website, and which are not necessarily religious in orientation. These racially based groups fit into that category.

Ramakrishnananda – This group has multiple websites. Their practices are very controlling of every aspect of the members. Exposure of their practices is made available on another website by those desiring to warn others who might venture into the groups embrace.

Endeavor Academy – Surrender of funds and material possessions are included in the control exercised by this group. Emotional manipulation through the use of fear and guilt, which is typical in cults, is used very skillfully in this group.

Freedom of Mind is an organization devoted to helping individuals and families break free from organizations that use mind control techniques to recruit and control their members. It maintains a large listing of organizations that people may have questions about. Many of the organizations listed are NOT cults, but information is provided to assist people in finding out the truth about many different unique organizations, so that they can make that determination.
